Ah the surfers hangout. This sure brings back memories went back in 2007 man has it changed I hadn't been down there since 1985 My mom worked at the rascal house for 15 years went there to eat the food was great but it sure looked run down Wolfie Cohen would have never let it get that way. They were getting ready to shut it down for good glad i got to go there one more time. Its a shame that its built up like it is where every square inch is concrete. I owned Wallys Auto and Marine machine service at 18290 west dixie hwy from 1977 to 1980 and moved the whole shebang to Dallas Texas in 1980. I Moved to North Miami Beach in 1958 from Hallendale and grew up there.

This is one of the places we surfed in the late 60's. We could hitch a ride almost anywhere on 163rd Street and get a ride, boards and all to Sunny Isles. Thanks for the memories!

Wow Tommy Strand & The Upper hand!!! That would be Florida Bassist Jaco Pastorious's (May he rest in God's Peace) old band before he EXPLODED on the scene with Weather Report!!! Did you know Jaco back then 'miamicrg'???

Don--you are bringing out the memories! Tommy Strand & The Upper Hand was a famous local band at that time who also played at The Seven Seas in The Newport Hotel. My neighbor was a guy named Shelly who was 12 years old when I was 6 in '57. We were living at an apartment complex called Larchmont Gardens. Shelly played trumpet for Tommy. They did play on the late night Joey Bishop Show--who just passed away at 89 yesterday. The Rat Pack reunited once again! RIP Joey....Thanks for all the wonderful enjoyment you gave us all....

My cousin Joe Bertolami was the pool boy at The Newport in the early 70's. He did the job for one reason--all the women he could meet! So my family had the Newport covered in those years--Joe's older brother Ron played bass for Mike Vetro in the late 60's--our cousin Al Bertolami ran the lights at The Seven Seas.
