1938 - Pan American Airways System Consolidated Commodore flying boats at Dinner Key

Dinner Key, Miami, Florida

The Consolidated Commodore designed as a Naval patrol flying boat originally. It was the first passenger aircraft to have upholstered seats. Pan American used these aircraft in the Caribbean area during the 20s and 30s. The aircraft had 22 seats, flew at 108 mph, had a 17,600 pound max gross takeoff weight, 1000 mile range, was powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney Hornet engines (575 hp), was 68 feet long, 16 feet in height, and a 100-foot wingspan. Pan American had 14 Commodores. The last one left service after 16 years of flying for Pan Am on September 19, 1946.

In addition to passenger service, Pan American trained hundred of Royal Air Force navigators in Commodores modified for navigational training in 1944.

Regarding the statement above about training RAF Navigators, the Pan American Airways Navigation Section was used between March 1941 and October 1942 and approximately 1,200 RAF Airmen went through the training program during that time. The navigator from my cousin's Lancaster crew, Sgt Bill Bailey, was one of them. Unfortunately he was killed in July 1943 about a year after completing the course when his Lancaster was shot down returning from an Op to Cologne.

To whom it may concern,

I have recently penned a historical novel set in 1937 about a young women operating a flying-boat service from Southampton to Darwin using a Consolidated Commodore. 'The Supermariner' has been published on Kindle and I am currently advertising it on Facebook. I have gone to great lengths to establish an accurate historical context and I am looking to use an image of the Consolidated Commodore in the accompanying 'Notes' on Facebook so that readers might better understand this period of history. I am thus writing to enquire whether you hold the rights to any images that I could subsequently use.

As I say, the book is currently available to buy on Kindle but I am also in the process of producing hard copies. I would be very happy to send you a complimentary copy if you wish as soon as they are available.

Many thanks.
