1971 - Looking north on NW 67 Avenue (Ludlam Road) at the Palmetto Expressway

Just north of Miami Lakes, Florida

There was nothing along NW 67 Avenue north of the Palmetto at this time. NW 67th eventually ran into the Country Club of Miami just above what is now NW 186th Street and traffic skirted the east side of that development on Bob-o-Link Drive until the county line at NW 199th Street. There used to be a private airstrip on the east side of Bob-o-Link Drive with several private aircraft parked there and owned by residents of the Country Club of Miami.

There also used to be signs on poles for traffic exiting the Palmetto at NW 67th Avenue stating "New Town Miami Lakes" with an arrow pointing to the south where Miami Lakes was. However, over the years people started moving into developments north of the Palmetto and rather than use "Carol City" which was closer they told people they lived in Miami Lakes. I surmise they removed the "New Town Miami Lakes" signs because they were confusing people going north of the Palmetto.

Back in 1958, 59ish, Mrs. Toms, Tommy Toms' mother, was a teacher at John G. DuPuis Elem. School, where I attended; In 1960/61, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith's 6th grade was invited to the Toms Ranch, which was all that land just south of the East/West Harriet:
Expressway (Palmetto) between Red Road and Ludlum. They had a huge house and lots of horses that we all got to ride on. I thought I was such a hotshot with horses because I used to ride the mechanical horse in front of the Food Fair on E. 4th Ave. and the 'real' pony rides on Okeechobee Rd. Well the horse took off at lightning speed with me on it. Oh, but by the grace of God am I here to tell you about it. I eventually got thrown off. Only my pride was injured plus a few bruises.

My little brother knocked on Jackie Gleason's door in the Country Club and sold him some tickets to the Scout Jamboree. He just answered the door! I broke my arm skateboarding under that overpass in 1976.

You have it reversed - Burger King is on the left corner just past the Palmetto and McDonald's is on the right corner. I do have some aerial photos of CC of M and PSN and 186th Street isn't even built yet.

I live across from the Country Club of Miami and I love to see these old photos of how it used to look like back then..Things do change! If I'm not mistaken, on the corner left, is now a McDonald's and on the corner right, Burger King. If you go past the expressway (826) further down, would now be Main Street. Wow! Any pics on how NW 186 Street used to look like?

"Man..that blows me away..do the kids that live there have any idea of the town they live in that used to be. No..they just trash everything..sorry...I get misty eyed reading your commentaries"

Yes, we do, actually. I'm a "young kid" that lives in the CCM, and I was actually offended by your comment. I'm only 24 years old and have appreciated living in this neighborhood for the past 20 years. Rarely are there any serious crimes, it's a great place to raise kids, it's quiet and for the most part the neighbors are friendly. Yes, there are some wonderful actors, golfers and business men that have lived here. I've had the opportunity to take a look around Jackie Gleason's "game room" part of the house, I guess you can call it. And it was exciting. But for people to think that kids now days don't understand the history of Miami, or Miami Lakes or whatever part of Dade County you want to name is completely, in my opinion, predictable of the older generation.

Of course there are some whom, of course, could care less. But imagine your parents sitting around when you were teenagers, talking with their friends. They probably were saying the same thing! It just sucks that people don't think we know things because we're kids. Think back how many times you told your parents "I'm not dumb. I know what's going on."

It's really sad when people make comments like that. When adults (who are supposed to encourage younger people) only say negative things about them, it's no wonder kids/young adults don't try any more. Way to lower the standards.

And by the way, your grammar and punctuation is fantastic. Just thought I'd let you know.

Guest: I did a little checking and sure enough, he was famous! According to Wikipedia, The Honeymooners Executive producer was Jack Philbin. I bet he would have had a ton of great stories that would have involved lots of 'booze and broads'!

Don- Did you know that a group of Country Club members got together 20 years ago or so...maybe longer and bought the Gleason house? They used it like a clubhouse...well, a clubhouse with booze anyway! I used to live at the Country Club in the early '90's, My best friend was a "cart boy" there and I would help him pull pins and stuff at the end of the night. During this time we would hang out at Rickey's and there was a very elderly gentelman that ate there a lot named Mr. Philbin. All of the waitresses used to tell me that he had something to do with "The Honeymooners" but it really didn't mean all that much to me at the time. Unbelievable!

Thanks Chuck for providing all those names and what they were famous for. CC of Miami was certainly full of famous sports stars and other elite way back in the 60's and 70's and it's a shame that the whole area is now overdeveloped and commercialized. Thanks again. Don

Hey Don--here are some of the famous people and local business icons who lived at The Country Club of Miami in the 60's & 70's.
Arnold Palmer (1st Pro there & minority owner in '61.)
Jackie Gleason
Jack Philbin--Gleason's producer & best friend
Leroy Jolly--Hall of Fame horse trainer
Johhny Nerod--Hall of Fame horse trainer
Eddie Neloy--Hall of Fame horse trainer
Felix Bocchicchio (Boxer Jersey Joe Walcott's trainer & mob big shot)
Alvin Dark--Baseball player & manager
Jose Ferrer--Famous actor
Al Maroone--Car dealer (His son Mike is now COO of AutoNation)
Ed Morse--Car dealer
Luke Bolton--Car dealer
Don Clayton--Putt Putt CEO
Gene Stout--Golf Pro to President Eisenhower & only 1 of 3 men to ever have been the Head Pro at Augusta National
Paul Haln--famous golf trick shot artist
Lesley Hobart--Women's PGA pro--woman's golf coach at UM

I probably have forgotten a few. For a young guy like myself--it was a cool job--for you would see someone famous all the time. I just wish I was the photo bug you are Don--for it would have been no problem (especially in those days) to have had a great collection of pics!

Don--Guy Bailey owned all of the land from Bird Rd east to the end of the West course at The Country Club of Miami (past 67th ave.) to South at Palmetto Expressway to north past the Country Club of Miami Estates. I think it was 3x2 miles I believe. The airstrip was first put there for residents but the first to use it was Guy and the golf trickshot artist Paul Hahn. Guy had a beautiful white Cadillac Eldorodo convertible--but what made it unique to me was he had one of those radio dispatched phones in it--now this was in '67--didn't see too many of those! I used to take it into Miami Lakes to get it washed--or to the Firestone in Miami on Biscayne Blvd to get it seviced--for a 16-18 year old guy--how heady was that. Thank God I never got into an accident!

What about Palm Springs North community. A hand full of us teens (the first in PSN communtiy) were put up against a coin toss (truely) to see if we would be bused to Hialeah High or Miami Carol City Sr. High. MCC lost the toss and we were bused there. Oh a few went to HH but had to be driven by parents. The entrance was right off Palmetto just befor the "big curve". years later it was moved to the side, off 67 ave. The second development was name after the TV show Bonanza. All the model homes were named after characters and the Ponderosa. The "Little Joe" was my favourit" cause I had such a crush on him. Dan Blocker did the ribbion cutting for the grand opening of the new home models. He let me try his hat on, it came down to my shoulders. He was a wonderful. friendly man and hugh to a kid of 8 ot 10. I could go on and on.....thanks so much for the sweet and wondeful memories. Any one out there remember PSN

Yep, he had a giant one-story home and his backyard to the south was part of the east course. Unfortunately he didn't stay and he moved to Inverrary after a few years. Don
