Photo taken while waiting for the first aircraft (Pan Am B747) to take off on runway 27-left after the runway was extended to 13,002 feet from 9000+ feet in a lenghty construction process. There was so much dust on the runway that the Pan Am B747 left a huge cloud along the takeoff length of the runway.
Jim Sheppard was Manager of the FAA's Miami Airports District Office (ADO) which was moved to Orlando later in the 1980's. The last we heard he is the Airport Planning Manager for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.
