Miami, Florida

Thank you to Chuck Johnson for contributing this great old image. Chuck also provided this great information about Cracker Jim Brooker:

"Cracker Jim started broadcasting at WBAY in Miami in the 1940's and moved to 50,000 watt WMIE and WEDR-FM. For many years he broadcast live from a booth in Shell's City. Brooker also was a promoter and brought top country acts into Dade County and Dinner Key Auditoriums. He sold broadcast advertising and locally hosted recorded national television programs. He was active in creation of the Country Music Association and served on its first board of directors. That organization has grown and now sponsors the CMA Country Music Awards."

Guest: thank you for adding your memories of Cracker Jim at Shell's City, the details of where his broadcast booth was and broadcasting from his home. Yep, 60 years ago, it seems like 30 years ago to me, haha, and time is flying by even faster now.

I remember seeing Cracker Jim in person often in Shell's City restaurant before they shut it down and expanded the pharmacy into that area. Not too far from the restaurant doors was the sporting goods section where there was a very high set of stairs with no siderail that took one up to the broadcast booth up near the roof of the building overlooking the store where he broadcasted from. At some point he was broadcasting from a studio he built in his home. Gee that was probably 60 years ago.
