The sliced apples were arranged over a mixture of 6 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup of sugar and the combined ingredients (minus the pie crust top) were cooked on medium heat for 10 minutes so the sugar could combine with the butter and turn amber. (Of course, you can't tell whether or not it's amber because you're cooking in a cast iron pan). After the 10 minutes are the pan and contents are placed in a preheated 425 degree oven and are baked for 30 minutes, after which you open the oven and place the pie crust which has been trimmed around a 9" pie pan on top. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the crust turns brown. Click on next to see the turned-out tart and original recipe.
