Jocotoco Reserve

This gallery is made up of photos of the premier bird of this tour: the Jocotoco Antpitta. This bird was found as recently as 1997, and described to science in 1999 as Grallaria ridgelyi. These antpittas live in the dark understory tangle of dense forests, on steep slopes. As with antpittas in general they are shy and wary, and very difficult to see. These have been "trained" to come to an offering of worms an about eight every morning. Visitors can come and hope for a chance to see one. We were lucky on two mornings to see several come to get their worms. Their name Jocotoco is a loose description of their vocalization, which we also heard. They stand about nine inches tall on long legs and with very short tail. It is very different from any other species of antpitta.
