This is shot with a Vivtar 285HV flash unit set to a low, fractional power like 1/8th power I'd guess. Most all of the exposure is from ambient light, and it's windy. The flash doesn't provide much fill-in,but it does give an eye catchlight in each eye, but the MAJORITY of this exposure is the ambient lighting, with the shutter speed kept at 1/250, the fastest flash speed with a low-tech flash like the 285HV is 1/250 second, so I use the aperture of f/3.5 to control depth of field, and the fractional power of the 285HV to get the degree of flash power to ambient that I feel I need. In the following frame, I have boosted the flash power level to what I'd guess is 1/2 power.
