I set my Vivitar 285HV flash up on a Manfrotto light stand at the top of the bleachers, set to NORM on the zoom head, and half power manual flash output.I power the 285 with a Quantum Battery One battery, and trigger it with the Pocket Wizard system. I typically set up my location lighting for basketball so that my light unit throws a shadow of the basket on the far wall, and then I shoot from the stands, the way the spectators see the game.Shooting from the stands gives a point of view that mirrors what the fans see,and which is vastly different from the all-too-typical end-line or corner camera position with a short lens. For this camera position, I like a 200mm lens length. When the shot was converted to B&W in the newspaper, the shadow of the net and ball came through quite, quite nicely. It also ran on page 1 alongside the masthead in 4-color, as the sports teaser photo.
