I took a whimsical trip to Belize, which I planned in just a few days! I was going through some tough times and decided to go on this trip to get away and regroup. Belize is the mainland that I flew into, but the destination was Ambergris Caye, which was a 15 min puddle jump away. I thought I was going to Ambergris to do some soul searching and get some quiet diving in, but that thought only lasted ˝ day. After my first boat dive I met some folks from Los Angeles California, whom were very generous and included me into the fold of their group. We dove together, ate together, and of course partied together! It was a great time… On each day we had a new dive destination where we made new friends from England, Florida, Kansas, and our home state of California. Each day the group grew and we all got to know each other through our dive stories. One of the fun things that happened was the long boat rides back to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The boat trips typically took 2.5 hours to get back in, which gave the dive boat operators an excuse to keep the customers happy… Awwww alas, suddenly our hands had cups full of Rum Punch! The rum punch was an additive drink that had us all running and clamoring back for more.. It was truly too funny. On one long trip back the boat crew made a requested stop, at a different Island named Caye Caulker, so that we could replenish our rum punch reserves. The Caye Caulker locals must have thought the dive crew was torturing the passengers, as we all were jumping off the boat to cool our heels.. When we reached San Pedro the rum needed to be protected, but was lost to some greedy rum runners (boat crew)… No fear dinner was soon served. The food was very good on this Island and with plenty of variety. The local dives were nice, and the long trips out to Turneffe Atoll, Blue Hole, and Half Moon Caye were beautiful and well worth the trip!
