Jade Plant.JPG

I have lots of allergies and don't garden or have many plants.
Notice the two very wrinkled looking leaves that fell off. I looked up
how to care for this plant and it says this is over-watering but I am
watering it so little, I can't believe that is the cause. Any suggestions
on what I am doing wrong?

This plant has lots of sentimental value to me. My sister (Cindy, the one
with cancer) and I bought this plant for my Mom back in the mid 70s when she
was in the hospital after a bad accident. My Mom has kept this plant healthy
all these years until last Jan. she had to give up her house and move into
a very small senior apartment. She had to give up her beloved houseplants
due to space issues. I took this one because it symbolized my Mother surviving
her accident.

I've been caring for my wife's Jade plant for 2+ years. I water it about every 2-3 weeks (half as often as other houseplants). Even the cacti get more water. It still looks OK!

I'm sorry I can't help you, but I like your photo Debbie!

My jade plant has been dropping leaves too. Someone told me too much water, but I hardly ever water it... maybe a little once a week. I backed off and only water every other week now and it is not doing any better. My plan B is to repot and see what happens. As an option, you can start a new one. They are fairly easy to start, you can stick a leaf or one of the branches in soft dirt and it will root.

We've never watered our pot of Jade (Crassula ovata) and its thrived just on natural
rainfall, and we've had a 10 year drought before some welcome rains this year. Ours lives outside and is quite pot-bound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jade_plant

They look actually good and they don´t need much care! I agree with Sandra!

I have not really green fingers with pot plants...so I cannot give any advise, but the plant looks a miserable.
I understand your concern!

I have a very healthy one; it lives outside and gets no attention at all. Here I understood it should live close to the door to bring luck to those who live in the house!

If it is in a relatively level interior condition, it should require very little water (maybe once a week or twice when the dry heated air is running). It helps to learn to feel the moisture of the soil. If it get direct light through a window try to make it morning light. Use a fertilizer (like Miracle Grow) disolved in water about twice a year. Once a year put in in a sink and let the water flow though it and out into the drain to wash out built up salts from the fertilizer.

Good luck on it. Only water just a little bit every two weeks or so and maybe put in a larger pot.

I have no green thumb.... that why I take photos. Lost my plant like that. But replanting, as per professional guidance, does miracles. I'm sure the net has the recipe for the right soil. Sun is also an aspect, you gotta know their needs, from shade to full light. Wish you luck, you have to keep it alive.

Barbara is right, these guys need very little watering.

it doesn't need much water... storing it in these big leaves... and could need a crop too...
They can survive without any care...

I'd be interested in knowing about caring for this plant too. Like you, mine has sentimental value and it is not very healthy. I have lost about 80% of mine in the last two years. I wonder if your pot is too small?
Sorry to hear about your mother having to leave her house. That's a tough transition to make.
