Skyros Island - windswept pride in the heart of the Aegean
Between 16 and 22 August 2004 I visited the island of Skyros for a second time. Skyros, belonging to the Sporades complex, is an isolated island which somewhat like hovers in the middle of the Aegean Sea and is renowned as the place where Achilles, the hero of the greek mythology, was brought up. Almost throughout the whole year, the island is being swept by strong winds. Skyros Town is built amphitheatrically, around a bluff rocky hill, while the scenery at the rest of the island changes suddenly from dry in the south to green in the north.
White decorated rock...
...from East...
...to West.
Blessed revolutionaries...
...in Central Square.
Castle-protected medieval monastery...
...in between roof and wall.
High Noon emptiness...
...in smaller streets as well.
Stacked up until the evening
A blossomed shade over the staircase
Heavy steps...
...green by green...
...or green by grey...
...will descend to the other side.
Lit by the setting sun...
...at the Square of Eternal Poetry.
Rupert Brooke gazes at the rock...
...turning his back on Molos and Maghazia.
Terrace to immenseness
In the middle of nowhere
Overlooking Kyra-Panaghia...
...and Atsitsa Bay - from one side...
...or another.
Pefkos Bay, a western-shore shelter...
...for boats...
...and for swimmers.
White spots...
...and grey shelves...
...just at sea surface level.
Kolymbada Beach, for the less social ones
The short-bodied Skyrian horse...
...in its natural shelter.
Shaped by the wind
A yellow-lit dinner with Skyros traditional food...
...lobster spaghetti!
Linaria Port by night...
...as viewed from this bar on the rocks.
Last blue memories upon departure
