The Maltese buses, the only massive transportation means on the island, are rather a tourist attraction than an effective means of transportation. The vast majority of the fleet consists of vintage Bedfords and Leylands dating back from the 1950s and '60s, with no mod cons at all: they are noisy, with uncomfortable seats, non-present suspension, and they can be awfully hot in mid-summer. During the last years, some of them have been replaced by state-of-the-art, air-conditioned buses that feature even large LCD screens displaying TV broadcasts to the passengers. The replacement of the old buses is a controversial issue; while the Maltese are in favour of the replacement as an improvement in their everyday lives, the picturesque appearance of the old buses is considered a stong plus for the improvement of tourism.
