This is a shot of a cloud covering the sun in the late afternoon (about 6pm) in Washington. The color version has not been color adjusted; the dark "rays" are for real. The monotone was made using a standard channel mixer set to 68,24,8.
First day of DC touring with Karen Leaf. Some images from the day. Not sure which I'll leave and which I'll move to extras. Compromising shots of Karen being saved up.
I normally use the "channel mixer" method. It's really a pretty simple Photoshop operation. It can be done either with Image>Adjust>Channer Mixer or (my preference) as a layer adjustment, Layers>New Adjustment Layer>Channel Mixer. In the Channerl Mixer dialog, check the Monochrome box and set the percentages on the Red, Green, and Blue channels to somehthing like 68, 24, 8. They should add up to 100 if you want to keep the basic luminosity of the photo to remain the same, but you can set them to anything that you like. That's pretty much it. It makes a pretty simple action.

Any chance you could talk about what you did to change the color image to black and white? I love black and white, but I've never been able to do it completely to my satisfaction through Photoshop. I miss the old darkroom in this respect.
