Was stationed at Kadena from March of '64 to September of '65. Worked at an office on the flight line...and, 'off-duty' for the first year at AFRTS...and, for the last year..worked 'off-duty' for what was then KSBK. Had an unbelievable time while on Okinawa. Loved every minute of it.

My family was there 1966-1968 with the NSA. We lived at 1802 Kishaba Terrace. I was only 6-8 yrs old but I fondly remember Okinawa. Okuma rest center. Our back yard backed up to Habu Canyon. I played there all the time. I went to Sukiran Elementary. I remember the flower lady with this huge thing of flowers on her head and I would buy flowers for my mom for 10 cents. We had a maid, gardener & sew girl.

I was stationed on Okinawa from October 1970 to December 1971 with the US Army Pacific Intelligence School near Camp Sukiran. We trained ARVN troops in counter-intelligence operations. My buddies and me spent a lot of off hours down at Gate 2 street. Seeing these photos and reading posts brings back a lot of memories.

Stationed with the Army at Sukiran in 1973-74, 258th Personnel Svcs Company. Paper pushers for the Army personnel stationed on the island. Great duty. A lot of firsts for a 19 year old NCO. First time for eating Kobe beef, steam bathhouse, spring rolls, Taco Charlies, learned to SCUBA dive and bought great stereo equipment. Only there for a year, tore knee up playing football, got sent stateside to get it fixed. Great experience. Loved the people.

Just happened upon this site. I was a civilian nurse and worked at Camp Kue Army Hospital from 1969 - 71 when my husband was stationed at Tori Station with the air force. This was when the Viet Nam war was escalating. The island was beautiful and we took lots of pictures when we were there. Things sure have changed since then. Enjoyed your pictures!

I lived there from '70-'73 when my dad (B. Biggs) was stationed at Kadena AFB. I was young but remember the riots at the gates to school (we had to hit the floor when we went through the gate). The beaches were beautiful and the water warm. I'd like to visit again!

Good times. Good assignment. 29th Army Band from '65-'67. Many performances all over the island from Naha to Machinato to off island; Ie Shima Ernie Pyle memorial. Busy days, but one of my most pleasant assignments. I didn't want reassignment, ever. My MOS was trumpet but took over drum major when Sgt Ching rotated.

hi, great site. i lived in Oki from 1953 to 1957. we lived at 1956 Kishaba Terrace. my dad was stationed at Rycom Headquarters. i went to Kubasaki Jr. high, and Kubasaki high for the tenth grade. i ended back there in 1968 on my way back from Vn. beautiful island. loved the people. i remember finding a jap machine gun with a dead trooper in a cave, and mines blowing up regularly. would love to hear from anyone who was there in the same time frame. email is rpbrittingham@yahoo.com

We landed at Naha in 1955 to rehab bases for the Third Marine Division to move to Okinawa from Japan.We wre a group of about two hundred Marines and the first Marines to land on Okinawa soil since WW II. The natives loved us and opened their hearts and homes to us (a far change from today's relations). We were stationed at Camp Tengan (now Camp Courtney). The baseswas nothing but rusted quonset huts and mud. It was our job to rehab them so that they could be used as housing etc. It was tough but we were young rough Marines and we loved it. Later, we moived to Camp Kawasaki. I was there until 1956 and returned to the States (MCAS El Toro). They were great times in my life. Ooh Rah and Semper Fi for "The Rock". I was stationed at the 340th Supply Co., 2nd Log Command, 1967 to 1969. Our CO was Capt. Glassman, mailman was Zernik, company driver was Brady. I worked in Personnel under Major Haynes. Some of my buddies were Carlos Houston, Timothy Hollenbeck, Buddy Robbins, Bayer, Nagin, Hamil, Zuelke, Leary, Poe, Andrews, Galore. nasaki I was really impressed! By the way, I'm looking for videos teken in Okinawa and Tokyo in 1954 & 55.It is the video of The Teahouse of the August Moon. In 1954, the play was performed on base here in Okinawa, supposedly for 15 times. I really wish somebody had taken the performance. Next year, the same play was performed at Kabukiza in Tokyo. I'm doing some reserch about those two production. I had some photoes of those production, but to dig into the theatre performance, I 'd like to see the videos. If anybocy could have heard about those production, and could ahve made them record in some way, would you please help my research? I'd like to know the real stages and like to make sure how those American audiences in 1950s appreciated the play. As well, I'm looking for the video of the performance in New York. I'd be reakky appreciatd your help. Or if any could have got some information about those theatre production, would you please let me know? I was stationed at Torii Station from November 1960 to thru Novemember 1962. Was in the USASA. I was trying to recall some of the typhoons we had. I'm pretty sure there was one during that time that was close to or over 160 mph. Does anybody remember it? After seeing all the photos, I realize now that I spent too much time at the bars in Kadena Circle and missed out on some great sightseeing. Miss the bbqs to at White Beach.

I lived in Okinawa from 1974 to 1975, about a year and a half with my then lance corporal marine husband (stationed at Camp Courtney). I worked at the USO on Karden and drove tax on Kadena AFB. I wish I had kept in contact with some of the folks I knew then. One gal, Jill Craig (I think was her name) lived next to me off base near Kadena. There was an old bowling alley on the way to gate 2 street. I wonder if it is still there?

I went to Okinawa in February, 1970 after spending 6 months stateside after Vietnam. Was not very happy about this especially since it looked like I was going to have to leave my wife again. Fortunately I was an NCO by this time and she was able to go with me. It wasn't bad duty but I can't say I liked being on an island where I could only go so far before running out of land. This was also the time of Okinawan (Japanese) uprisings and I had to go on alerts several times without ammo and with fixed bayonets. None of us liked this after Vietnam. Lot of predjudice towards Orientals. But, all in all they were nice people. The best part of the whole tour was that my first child (JaNaye) was born at the base hospital. Also, we lived in a two room apartment in Futenma.

I lived on oki from sep 51 to aug 63. After 2 years with the army in vn, came back to the rock to work as a civilian for the army for 5 yrs. Attended the u md and came back to md to finish my degree. I have many fond memories of my yrs there and would like to see all the changes. One thing that will never change is the beauty of the island and the people. Thank you for the great pictures,

I was stationed at Camp Sukiran from March 1954 to April 1955. Woked on the military newspaper as a reporter, played a lot of golf at Awase when it had sand greens and 9 holes. Also served as a stringer for the Naha Times. Organized the first football/soccer team on the islands. We played most games against British ships that would anchor at White Beach. Always wondered why natives moves around so slowly on my arrival but realized the humidity made it necessary. Still have many photos of those soccer games.

When I was in Okinawa it was only a "stop over" to Viet Nam. We had two days which ruined two sets of whites caused by the rain. At that time we didn't care because we didn't think we were coming back anyway. Unfortunly (spelling) at the age of 19-23 we were "Cannon fodder" anyway. I would have liked to take pictures and sight see, but it didn't seem like the time for it. When I came home in uniform I stopped at the nearest bar and bought my own drinks. "Welcome home from Viet Nam!

My husband Steve was stationed at Kadena Airbase. I arrived on Okinawa 5 or 6 months pregnant with our first child. He was born at Camp Kuey Hospital. I loved Okinawa and I made every attempt to absorb as much of the culture as possble, with the exception of B.C. street which I joked stood for Before Christ because he had never been there. I witnessed the riots before the reversion. I went through at least three hurricanes. I drank in the beauty of the Island and I would love to see it again.

Lived Naha when father was stationed there 66-67, Memories are for me distant, but fond, we lived on the economy off Kadena, I remember 1st grade but not my teacher. I remember dressing up for sister day and the kimona i used belonged to the land lords daughter it was mostly red with flowers(cherry blossoms?) and wearing wooden sandles with theze footie things, I remember the wall outside across from our rental apartment, Mum said we lived just a few blocks from the Red district, Seemed like there were billions of condo like places going in and some of kids use to wander in them even up high, I shudder to imagine my grand children doing that but we did, and the flip flop factory, argh the glue smell,. I'd give a lot to hve been older when we were there... Great site and lovely pictures!

I lived on Okinawa 66-68 when my Dad was in USAF. He was in RASP(Ryuku Armed Service Police. Our home was always a nexus of visitors from all branches of US Armed Services. We lived at T-8 Chibana for a year or so until we moved on base to Jennings area on Kadena. We moved up from a poured cement flat roofed home to a quonset hut, I went to M&K Elementary school, then to another school on Kadena. Miss Ritchie and Miss Waller were my teachers. Our maid was Toyoka Yari from Kina village. Wonder if anyone knows if Kina village is still around. I went to Koza Baptist Church and know that is still in existence.

I was an air force maintenance officer with the 374th tac arlift wing at Naha AB from 1966 to 1968. Lived off base at Machinato Point. Great assignment but understand that small housing area on Machinato Point no longer exists. Change is inevitable I guess. Oh well. I have fond memories of the place anyway. hello I was on the island from 1964 to 1966 except for two brief tours to siagon. Iwas a c-130 aircraft mechanic . I was 19 when I arrived. I had never been out of the states.The people were the most wonderfull people I had ever met and still to this day I have fond memories of the friends I had there. WAS LOOKING FOR TYPHOON PHOTOS FROM 1974 WAS 9 YEARS OLD IN JAPAN, HAD WONDERFUL BEAUTIFUL OKINAWAN NEIGHBORS, THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY. I REMEMBER THE RED DIRT ON THE ARMY BASE AND THE TINY TINY LITTLE CARS THAT WERE DRIVEN. THE WOMEN SAT IN THE BACK OF THE CARS AND THE LIL BOY SAT IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR WITH HIS FATHER. THEY HAD SLIDING DOORS IN THEIR HOUSE AS WELL. WAS LOOKING FOR INFO ON SUICIDE MOUNTAIN/CLIFF. AND I REMEMBER THE TUMBS IN THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAINS.

I left the Nave and went back and worked for the University of Maryland where I also got my Master's in Counseling. I was stationed 18 months on Okinawa in '59-60 and based at Machinato. I was with a Nike missile Ordinance support team assigned to one of the active sites. Each work day trip up the mountain to my site (#6) was another day of marveling at the beautiful views and especially those of the numerious rice patties. And skin diving off of what we knew as Bolo Point in some of the clearest waters ever will forever be a high point. Thanks for the pictures. And yes, the people were very kind and gracious. I hope I represented America well.

Tom Gauger I was an Army brat living at Sukiran and riding the school bus to Kubasaki high 1956-58. Okinawa is a garden spot and I really miss a lot of people. Dave Wilbur and the other guys in my Sea Scout unit...where are you! A wild trip to Formosa... and the Navy took us on camping trips aboard one of their supply ships to Miyako Shima. What a trip!

To Don Kingsley: I remember the little league field on top of the hill at Naha. I was on a team called the Jets. We had a great time playing baseball and going to the sports banquet at the end of the season. You had to watch out for poison snakes on the hillside but other than that it was a blast. Some of my team mates were David Edgar, Jay Silvester, Brian Cole, etc. What year were you there. I was there from '59-'62. I left in the seventh grade. Remember a girl I liked named Bonnie Weeks.

I played for both the Gunners and the Rangers (Army teams). There were teams for the USN, USAF. I do not recall a Marine team. There were also one or two Okinawan teams. Please let me know. my dad was stationed on okinawa in 1960 and we left in 1962. we lived in the housing area called kishaba terrace which was right below ft buckner little club. my brother and i rode the army bus to the px, pool and any where else we need to go. rode our bicycles a lot, too. i remember with fondness the stages of preparation for typhoons. we got to watch television all day when we had to stay inside. that was wonderful. AFARTS-armed forces radio and television. i attended sukiran elementary and mercy intermediate. we had a gardener named papasan, sewing lady named chio who made the best fried rice in the world and my friend's family had a maid who made tacos-first i ever had. my dad worked for rasp-ryukuyan armed services police. when we lived there the only milk we could get was in large metal cans. when we moved back to the mainland u.s, could not get used to fresh milk. there were so many great things about living there!

lived in base housing at sukiran, okinawa from 1954 to late 1956 as an army dependent, age 8 to 10.with my parents and 3 siblings, one of whom was born in yokohama japan, while we were stationed there, we were in japan with u.s occupation forces from feb 1948 to somtime at the start of the korean war. okinawa was a magical playground for us kids. we were blissfully unaware of the horrors of the invasion of the island. we played in caves (japanese soldiers were still hidden away, not knowing, or refusing to surrender after the war, after all..their emperor had told them to fight to the last man. a wonderful place to live and one i would like to visit, although i am accutely aware of the people there that want us gone.

I was stationed on Okinawa in the Army in 1967-1968. I was with the 16th L.E.M. Company and lived in the Quansit huts at Camp Boone for 19 months. I enjoyed taking tours, swimming in the South China Sea and exploring parts of the Island in my off duty hours. I would like to know if the Quansit huts are still at Camp Boone and if the skeet and trap ranges are still down on the ocean below the camp? I enjoyed reading the comments on this sight which brought back alot of nice memories. Thanks

I stumbled across this site while answering some questions for a friend in a cultural diveristy class... I was looking for pictures. And boy did I find them! My mother is from the main islands of Japan and my father was a merchant marine. I was born on Okinawa in 1962 and lived there until the summer of 1971. My father moved us to the states in preparation for the reversion. Before we left, I had attended Camp Boone Kindergarten, Mercy Elementary, and another elementary school on Naha AFB (that I can't recall the name of). That island is in my blood and I will forever be an island girl!

Wonderful going down memory lane. My father was stationed at Kadena, we lived off base at first near Kadena, then later moved to Naha base housing. Went to school in 7th grade at K-9 school (in Quonset huts), and high school at Kubasaki High till 10th grade. We lived there from 1969 to 1972. Loved it there. Attended Neighborhood Gospel Church and was baptized in the China Sea. So many fond memories of Okinawa!

Lived at Naha AFB from 1966-1969. Dad was a pilot and I was an adventure seeking kid of 9 -12. Spent many hours in caves and just finding WW2 artifacts. The army came out to the house we had in Machinato Heights twice. Once to pick up a hand gernade and the other time to pick up 12 sticks of dinamite I found in the rusty container. Found shell casings daily. Really loved living there.

Hi everyone! I was a Navy brat living on okinawa from 1957 to 1960. We live in the Seaview housing. My freinds and I spent hours from one end of the island to the other. We spent many hours exploring caves and learning Karate in the old High School just down the hill. It was an Okinawan school. We were treated well and learn gymnastics, karate and sword fighting (can't remember what it was called). for a bunch of nine and ten year olds it was one of the greatest times of our lifes. We learned more about baseball in those few years than all the years I played. Anyone every go spear fishing with home made spear guns down by Naminoue?

Thank you for bringing back wonderful memories. My dad was stationed at Naha AB from 56 - 59. I started frist grade there and had a blast climbing hills and riding card down them, finding caves, and playing in fox holes with all the other kids on base. It is the one place from my past that I would dearly love to go back to.

These are great. I also went to Sukiran Elementary at Ft. Buckner, from 1960-62. It was a very different time and era.. Before Vietnam changed everything.. Safe, magical and fun for little kids. And so very beautiful. I am grateful that I was exposed to a very beautiful, ancient culture, so different from the West, before prejudice could interfere with my experience.

Wow! Went to Okinawa in the early 80's and was stationed at MCAS Futenma. I loved it there so much that I stayed for 2 and a half years. The Okinawain people are very loving and generous. The island is buetiful, I traveled all over the place when I didn't have to work. I snorkled alot in the East China sea, walked out far on the coral reef at low tide exploring sea life. When to most of the attractions the island has to offer. over twent years later and i still miss that place. Fond memories and lovely sunsets.

Lived on Okinawa from 1959-1961. Started the fifth grade and left mid way through the 7th. We lived on base at 56 Lincoln Drive. Had a crush on a girl named Bonnie Weeks. Had a lot of fun exploring the caves and island. Before we moved on base we lived off base in a Quonset hut. We took the bus to school throught some of the villages. Summer was the best time because of all the activities provided for us such as archery, swimming, etc. Living on base provided a lot of fun with the neighborhood kids. I remember playing little league baseball(Jets) with David Edgar, Jay Silvester and others. Remember sliding down the hill on cardboard in our backyard. The worst time was when a typhoon hit and you were up all night trying to keep the water out of your house. Remember competing against Sukaran and Kadena during school track and field day. Those were great times, wish I could go back and relive them. Lots of memories but little space to write them down. Hope everyone who lived on Okinawa had as much fun as I did. Thanks and Regards

I lived on Okinawa from 1960 to 1967 and loved it. My Dad was the youth activities director for the base of Sukiran and Kadena. So I saw a lot of the Military life and all it had to offer. Never forget Okuma and Ishikawa beach. Almost got blown away when a typhoon peeled a storm shutter off our wall and we had to venture out to put it back in place. Wish I had my divers license at the time. But only 13 when I left, I had to look backwards in the planes window, and think-what a beautiful sight the island was from the air. Hope to go back soon!

With all the modernization taking place by Japan I only hope that the beauty of the island is not ruined. I remember swimming below the cliffs one summer day with a bunch of friends while watching some crazy off duty Marines cliff dive at Maeda point/cove/whatever not too far from Zanpa. I loved your pictures! I live in Okinawa with my husband and son. My husband is in the Air Force. Seeing those pictures has shown me more places that I need to go and visit. They also remind me of places I have already been to. It is very beautiful here :)

David, thank you so much for sharing these photos with us. I home-school my 6 year old son. His daily Geography activity is to close his eyes, spin the globe and let his finger land on a spot. We then browse the web for info and pics on that spot to learn more about it. He loves the process and is learning fast. He especially loved the pic of the Kijimuna Fairy. Glad to see your back safe in Korea and at PBase again, David! You were at the bottom of my favourites list for too long. Once again, each thumbnail in your gallery encourages me to click on and get the larger view. Just fabulous images!
