Paul and his younger brother Bruce lived across the street and three houses south from us in the 2700 block of Midvale Ave. Our first phone number was ARizona 75168, then GRanite 93165 then VErmont 93165. Mr and Mrs Reinauer (Max and Helen) looked alike...more like brother and sister than husband and wife. They were a perfect match...she used to scream and shreik and Max was virtually deaf from WWII blasts. Helen came into our Hebrew school class and screamed at us for writing something in chalk on the back of Paul's new artificial leather jacket. Paul had the entire Hardy Boys collection and some great books on magic and home chemistry. He went on to get advanced degrees in Geology and petroleum studies. They had a light blue two tone Plymouth that Paul sabotaged by letting all the air out of the tires. Helen's mother lived there for a while. She was an orthodox Jew who wore a traditional wig. Max used to stand out in front of the house on Memorial Day and play taps on a bugle...my father, Harold, upon seeing Max play would mumble under his breath, "He's a "mishuginah"." They had a great plum tree in their back yard. We would eat those sweet plums until we got diarrhea. The houses on the east side of Midvale shared the alley with the corresponding houses on the west side of Westwood Blvd. The Reinauer's house was opposite Hoody Martins, the Rubins and the Nortons. Only the Rubins could outscream Helen Reinauer. If you rode down the alley on your bike past the Rubins the doppler effect of the screaming was like listening to a European police car siren driving by. The last I heard, Paul had become a farmer in Humbolt California. Bruce was still living in the family home on Midvale working in the printing/office publishing business...though that was quite awhile ago.
