Kids on the Block

That Ted Sykes and Peter Syke, my next door neighbor (we lived at 2814 Veteran Avenue - we moved in 1958 after the state purchased our home to make way for the Santa Monica Freeway). I think that's Larry next to Peter, but I can't quite remember. On the far right is Steve Polivka. I'm not sure if I have the spelling right, and I'd like to find Steve.

This picture was taken near Coventry and Veteran facing Northward. The two Sykes brothers are on the left. Peter, in the Cub Scout uniform stole my Flexi...I found it in his front yard. We got into a fist fight and he laughed the entire time I pounded on him. The tall boy in the light plaid shirt is Scott Smith. He died a few years ago. Both Scott and Steve Polika (far right) lived on Veteran in the 2700 block. They lived across the street from one another. My cousins Mark, Mitchell, Perry and Ronnie Sperling, Rickey Rodriguez, Steve Paige and Craig Belzer lived on that block. Vickie Kent lived on Greenfied directly behind Scott Smith's house. She now lives on Kelton across the street from what used to be Mickey Lerner's house. I went to kindergarten and first grade at Overland Elementary with Scott and Steve. Once Clover opened we went there and started in room 7 with Miss Weinstein...where we studied rockets, dinasaurs and the dairy.
