Sheriff Daniel Jackson Brownell - Holmes Co FL - Killed November 26, 1872
Elected Sheriff for his first term at age 25 in 1857. Office suspended by Martial Law during the Confederate War 1860-1865. During this time he served as Clerk of the Court and member of the Home Guard, CSA. The Sheriff was at home with his family during the evening hours and someone came to his home and told him of a disturbance at the jail. He mounted his horse and rode the few miles into town responding to the call for assistance. He arrived at the county seat in Cerro Gordo and encounters a man resulting in a duel. Both the Sheriff and other man died during a duel.
