Sheriff Hartley of Butler County requested the assistance of Greenville Police Officer George Bryan and Deputy Oliver Bryan (George's Bryan's brother) to responded to a residence in the Till Community of Butler County. The sheriff had a warrant for a suspect who had burned down the Baptist Church in Till. The suspect resisted and fired several shots striking Officer Bryan. Officer Bryan was critically injured and died five days later.
The suspect was arrested for murder and several members of the suspects family were also arrested as being accessories to the murder. Fearing violence in the community and for the safety of the prisoner, Sheriff Hartley, had the suspect transfered to Fort Deposit and later to the jail in Montgomery. Officer Bryan was survived by his wife and five sons. Burial was at the Magnolia Cemetery and all city businesses in Greenville were closed during the hour of the funeral.
George was the son of Jesse Oliver Bryan and Sara Ann Boyett. The 1900 Census Records indicate George living in Greenville with his wife and five children. His occupation was listed as Police Officer. George Washington Bryan was born on 27 Dec 1857 in Rose Hill Covington Co AL and had a twin brother, Andrew Jackson Bryan who was married to Mary Jane Boyett.
