Pittsburgh, PA

I have been contemplating the term “snapshot.” In essence, it’s a photograph that is taken with out really composing or aiming the shot. There are days were I post a photo that is just a “snapshot.” Today I wanted to do this type of shooting. Cat and I went for a quick walk through the South Side Spectacular, a street fair held in one of Pittsburgh’s wilder neighborhoods. As we walked, I would quickly squeeze off shots.

As we passed through the throngs, a group of children stood out to me. I have noted them on the streets before, a group of homeless teens. Obviously high and a bit confused, they were being harassed by some of the local teens passing by them on the sidewalk. It was nothing serious, just name calling and such but it was enough to put these kids on edge. Wild eyed with fear they warily watched their antagonists walk past. Meanwhile, I was clicking away. This boy has obviously had a rough time of it. By the looks of both his black eyes, he may indeed have a reason to be in fear.

This is sad, to me. A boy living on the streets. A boy who has to develop thick, "I don't care" skin to protect himself. The photograph is top notch. Haunting. Expressive. And it makes me sad.

I think this is more than a snapshot. Ron you have a great eye and even in a quick shot your care of composition comes through. I think it show here very much with that nice line of the leg and arm taking you through the photo to the face. Really well done.

Nice 'snapshot' Ron! I think this is what they call the 'decisive moment'! You really caught the situation in this photo! Very nicely done!

Wonderful portrait, Ron. You certainly captured the mood. Oddly, I find myself contrasting the boy with the graphic of the woman on the poster behind him. They're almost opposites in both feeling and in position.

with that definition, every picture I take is a snapshot . . . and I am not disappointed in that at all!! If they are one iota as good as yours . . I done GOOD! =]
