Reverend Grant Mauricio Gallup

Grant Mauricio Gallup (28 January 1932 - 26 November 2009) was born in Stambaugh, Michigan. He entered Alma College, a Presbyterian affiliate, in 1950, and graduated magna cum laude. In 1956 he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.

For three decades Grant served St. Andrew's Church, an African-American mission on Chicago's west side. He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and once hosted the Black Panthers in his parish hall. He was a charter member of Integrity USA and the first chaplain to the Chicago chapter. Lifelong friend and Integrity founder Louie Crew once asked him how, as a gay man, parishioners were dealing with his openness, to which Grant responded, "The same way I deal with theirs."

For many years he served as host and caretaker of "Casa Ave Maria" in Managua, Nicaragua, a guest house for pilgrims from all around the world. An Episcopal priest canonically resident in the Diocese of Chicago, he wrote a series of reflections on the lectionary titled "Homily Grits". In 2003, Grant travelled to Iraq, offering himself as a human shield in hopes of preventing the impending U.S. invasion.

Grant passed away peacefully in his home in Managua, Nicaragua on Thanksgiving Day 26 November 2009. A memorial Mass was held Sunday 31 January 2010 with more than 100 friends and neighbors in attendance.
