Rhea Americana
One of my personal favorite birds from the Pantanal trip was the Greater Rhea, which we got to see on our first morning in the area. It was amazing to wake up and see this giant walking around in the distance and we took quite a few shots at a long distance not expecting to get very close. A few hours later we got a good dose of Pantanal magic when this Greater Rhea was walking in our direction occasionally being harassed by some Southern Lapwings. It is definitely a thrill to get such a good look at the largest bird in South America. Later in the trip we were treated to the bird’s famous zig-zag flight run when our truck came around a corner and startled it, what a thrill to see this impressive species in its element.
