Passing through

We worried about mines and RPGs but usually not in towns like this.

It's a lot harder for our service members in Iraq. Everywhere they go they have to worry that any vehicle on the road or something alongside the road could be a bomb. The stress of that is really wearing. There is no such thing as a non-combat job in that kind of environment.

We were on a combat move up hwy one past Swan Loc ( think it was Swan Loc) to help , think it was 2/2nd, who was in majo doo-doo. Seems like every time we were with 2/2nd we got into major doo-doo. Didn't mind though, they were some fighting Infantry! We were going through a town when I came around a corner and there's papa-San and his little horse cart carrying wood. Couldn't stop in time, so cart and wood went flying, along with the horse(killed it). From some where an MP jeep pulled up and got me out of the drivers hatch, telling me I was under arrest for destroying Vietnamese nationals property. The Colonel flying overhead called my tank commander and asked " why in the hell you stopped Sgt? He told him I was under arrest for tearing up a horse cart. After the Colonel stopped cussing the MP's, he said," o.k., they want my driver, tell them( we could hear) that one of them has to crawl in the drivers compartment and drive the tank, we had to move." When the MP's heard that, attitudes changed, said it was ok, accidental, just be careful. Loved seeing those REMF's get taken care of. Got in and there we went.

Nice shot, Dave ... these rides through these villages, however, always left me wondering about that guy on the right and how happy (or not) he was to see us ...
