Allen Jagielo was the quintessential "New Guy". He was a replacement medic who finished Jungle School in Lai Khe on 16 Oct. '67 and joined the battalion in the field that night. He was sent on patrol the next day. His first, and last. He fell in battle that day, along with too many others. Like those others, he fought and died bravely. When I came across his body in the jungle, all I could do was to touch his hand, say "I'm sorry", and then move on, because there were so many wounded who could still be helped.
Other than a brief conversation at the Battalion Aid Station in Lai Khe, I didn't have a chance to get to know him, but I will never forget him. Rest in Peace, Allen.
