Don Scott & me - '67

My friend Don Scott and I in a rather worn photo from sometime during the Summer of '67. Don and I both arrived a week or so of each other and forged an exceptional friendship as we survived our internship in the Battalion Aid Station. When we went on line, Don went to Alpha Co. and I went to Bravo Co. In this photo, taken by one of our friends and given to Don, we were standing together in combat gear. A note on the back says that we were getting ready to go out on night ambush patrol. Neither of us has any recollection of the time or circumstances. Since we were both carrying M-16s it was some time after we went on line. Before that I carried a .45.

When I moved from 2/2nd to 2/28th in September '67 Don was out on patrol and I didn't have a chance to say goodbye. After that, the two units were frequently in combat and rarely in basecamp at the same time. We were not able to connect again during our tour in Vietnam.

Don had a distinguished and lengthy tour on line with Alpha Co. After serving as a platoon medic he was the Alpha Co. senior aidman. He was pulled back into that role at least twice, due to the need for his skills and experience, combined with his dedication to the guys in Alpha. Don was decorated twice for heroism. He never hesitated when he was needed.

Don was not only a great friend, he was one of the nicest, bravest and most unassuming guys that I had the privilege of serving with in over 20 years of military service. Considering the quality of the people I encountered during my career, that says a lot.

Chaplain Clemmons (Sinbuster 6). Although we overlapped, it wasn't by much. I went over to 2/28th in late Sept. '67, and spent the rest of my tour as a Black Lion.

I intently, read you're personal stories, of the friendships & often of the hardships.
I feel like an outsider, these are you're memories & I am intruding upon them. I am seeking a familiar connection. The time is known to me Sept.69-70'. A battle I did not personally fight, though I would have. My "hero", my dad did. The "theater" was Vietnam.
Donald Leroy Welch, Army. 191st Military Intelligence, Air mobile detachment, 1st Calvary. Personal records request inquires, resulted in many documents I am attempting to decipher. April 16th 1970, is one such document. Awarded the Bronze medal, along with Francis R. Perry, both specialist four. A list of medals, pages of paperwork, none tell me the answers, I seek. My dad is my true hero, I do not make it through an hour without wondering, what he went through. It consumes my thoughts, I need to know. Caa anyone help?

Don is one of the great ones. I have always enjoyed his friendship and respected what he has done. He not only saved lives in Vietnam as a combat medic, he saved them for many years later as an outstanding Emergency Department RN in Racine, WI.

I graduated in '66 and remember how that war hung over the lives of the male students. You are doing a great job of telling the story. Voted.

Wayne Wade
11B10 in the 1/18th from Dec. 1966 to Dec 1967. Served under Richard Cavazos as battalion CO for much of that time. It was years later, that I realized what a legend this guy was, when it came to making command decisions. James Shelton wrote a description of him in the book called "The Beast is out There". www.iam777.org/cavazos.htm

Dave, thanx for the photo and the great writeup ... foxholes breed life-long friendships as your story attests ... hard to believe it was 40 some years ago.
