Lt. Al Bracey

Lt. Al Bracey was the 3rd Platoon leader during most of Operation Shenandoah II. Since I was only with the platoon for a short time before I became the Senior Aidman of Bravo Co., I didn't get to know him very well. I thought Lt. Bracey was was an excellent platoon leader who believed in taking care of his men. John McCoy spent his tour with the Third Herd of Bravo Co. and had deep respect for Lt. Bracey and his leadership. John's comments about Lt. Bracey are below. Unfortunately, both men have passed away, John in April of 2009, leaving behind them a legacy of respect and brotherhood.

My compliment to your excellent story about each soldier's life.

Dave ... that's one great compliment by John McCoy below ... I'm certain Bracey would love to have seen/heard it.

I didn't know that Lt. Bracey had passed away. I didn't have a chance to know him well, but he was a good platoon leader who cared about his men, which counted for a lot.

I had the distinct pleasure of being Lt. Bracey's RTO for the first three months in Nam. Al and I arrived in Bravo Company on the same day. He was the best platoon leader I had not only in Vietnam, but during my three years in the Army. I miss him to this day, and was saddened to learn from his sister that he died a few years ago. No more details were given to me by her. He was a good leader, and unlike the platoon leaders that we had after Al, he would have a conference with his combat experienced senior NCO's before making a final decision on platoon movements and actions when we were out operating by ourselves - platoon sized patrols, ambushes, etc. I will always have a love for this man in my heart and have good memories of him all of my life. May he rest in peace!

John
