Jerome was a copper mining city. Exhausted mine is nearby.
Recently Jerome was remade into an eclectic mix of stores offering crafts, arts & restaurants. Seems to have worked & the town was jumping on the Friday afternoon I spent there.

Jerome is built on a steep hillside with some very nice shops & some unkempt ones,
but all have neat & curious stuff for sale from minerals to fine art.
