Precious and well done! The b&w tx works well here. Very soft and lovely. jano

Thanks for the suggestions. The crop suggestion I might just give a try. Alas, I can't reshoot it. I might shoot her for her 40 week photos, and we might be able to get something like this for those. I have some others where his finger is in her bellybutton. Those are pretty cute, but not quite as nice as this, I think.

Yes this is swell for many reasons. Here are 2 thoughts. I would crop a bit off the bottom. This interest point for me begins at the exposed flesh of the belly and arm. If this could be reshot, I would have the hand more to the front so that you sould see the finger depressing the belly a little, and the arm coming in from more of a horizontal angle. Bill Warren

Is Neat Image free? Have to try that. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Sharon and aam,

aam - I have Neat Image and am pretty happy with its functioning. It's free and small so I think I'll stay with that, but thanks for the offer!

Fabulous shot, Christine! The concept alone is worth applause! Well done! ~Sharon

Christina, two things I should mention (re: B&W):
- The total of the Channel Mixer has to be 100%. You can go above/below 100% but not by much.
- For noise, I have a link to a free software in the net. let me know if interested.

Don't forget, 50% of a photo's info is in the green channel, so you might want to emphasize that channel.

Thanks for all the advice Ann. I will try that sometime. I don't know if it will fix this shot. If I get some time in the near future I'll try it out. Maybe it won't be as noisy as desat. (Then again, I might have shot this B&W, I can't remember!)

I like the interplay between mother and child and the notion of tention the pregnant stomach and finger create. I only wish the finger and hand was more in focus and like you I don't think USM will help much.

I dig this one too. Very nice.

hand image - not had image... Ann

Christina - Choose either level - new adjustment layer - channel mixer, or image - adjustments - channel mixer, click on the monochrome box in the lower left corner, and move the sliders until you get the effect you want. It's a great tool for black and white. I used it on the had image I submitted today. It started with the red channel 100% but since flesh tone is mostly red and I didn't want totally white fingers, I moved that slider down and moved the green and blue channels up to compensate. You get much more choice with the channel mixer than with desaturating the image. Good luck. Ann

See, a digital photo has 50% of the info in the green channel, the other 50% is between red and blue. So it's always recommended to start with 50% green. The rest is up to your taste/preference.

I don't know how to use the channel mixer.. :(

I think that because of the amount of noise that I get with this camera I always use more Neat Image than I want. Then it gets really soft.

I'm afraid a new camera won't give you a better B&W rendition. It's in the PP I think (the channel mixer is a great tool).
Squared C01-Feb-2007 19:23
Thanks guys.

aam - this just isn't all that sharp. I don't think more USM will help, but I'll give it a shot. This is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to a new camera. Better B&W rendition!

Terrific concept I luv it, well done Christina:--)

Waw, excellent photo. It could use a bit of USM if you ask me, but no big deal.
