Thanks Lonnit & Techo for your help, I have really learnt something about cropping and downsizing for 8 bit jpegs. I can't believe how those ugly artifacts appear depending upon which order one processes an image. I thought I was clever in cropping approx square and then just allowing PS to adjust the last little tweek by slightly distorting the image to exact L = W. Boy!!! did that produces ugly results? ... as evidenced by Lonnit's first comments. I played with this image a dozen times and got a dozen different results!
The multitude of lines in this pic. really exacerbate the jpg artifact problem.
I agree with Lonnit, this does work really well. All I would suggest would be a touch of extra contrast and brightness. Should help the eye wander less around the image and bring out those nice lines.
