I've changed my mind. I think almost every graphic element of this picture is also present in the other one that I've just moved to eligible. I also like the composition of the other one better, so this one goes to exhibition. -- Victor

Victor, those are amazing shots! Hard to choose one! Sorry for not being much help... --Olaf

I was going to reshoot this today. But the plant didn't bloom. Instead, I took some pictures of two other passion flowers.http://www.pbase.com/victorengel/in_progress I haven't decided yet which of these I like best. I included this picture here because of the twists and turns of the purple frills, which to me allude a bit to cursive writing, which touches on another meaning of graphic. Such an element is missing from my new pictures. -- Victor

I like the 3D look.

Yeah, I may redo this at a lower ISO. Of course it would be a different flower and tendril. This shot was handheld, so I needed a fast shutter speed, hence the high ISO setting. The Lithops shot, on the other hand was made with a tripod and mirror lockup. -- Victor

Great capture; fascinating colors and very sharp. (*) Perhaps a reduced iso might make the noise in the shadows less noticeable? -Ed Hahn

Getting back to your question, in lab mode, channel A pits red (greater A value) against green (lower A value). Channel B pits yellow (greater B value) against blue (lower B value). Since these two channels comprise the two dimensions of color in a complementary way, inverting both channels turns the colors in the image to their complementary colors while retaining the lightness, something simply inverting the image doesn't do. -- Victor

You're right. I did use lab. I'm not quite sure why I stated HSL. It's not the same, and the technique I used would not have worked with it. -- Victor
Canon DSLR Challenge11-Sep-2004 21:25
Close enough to say they are complementary (note: spelled correctly this time). You mean LAB, HSL stands for Hue Saturation Lightness and is not quite the same, is it? [not a rhetorical question] --Olaf

I decided to see how close to complementary (I looked it up -- it's not complimentary) these colors are. I took the picture, converted to HSL, and inverted the A and B channels. It wasn't a perfect match, so I adjusted the original slightly to make the match closer. Here is what I got.

Yes, they are. That is a major reason I chose to take this picture. I may take another similar one illuminated by blue sky instead of hazy sun. That should make the subject almost exactly complimentary. -- Victor

Oh, the endless variations of beauty Mother Nature holds for us to discover! The yellowish green frill is very close to being complimentary in color to the purple tendril. Great find! --Olaf

Love the color!
