Autumn

Some of you will remember "Spring" which I shot in May and entered in cslr-challenge 145.

I've been shooting the same scene at least once a month since - and I'll continue to do so for at least a year. This viewpoint and the other entered in this challenge is not quite the same as the one in "Spring", but the light was better from these two angles this time of year. The other images can be seen in my gallery Four seasons - one tree

Well done. I like this view better than the next one that you posted.

It might be a bit out of your way, Olaf, but the project is definitely worth the effort. -dtallakson

Olaf, thank you for sharing what you've learned from your experiences with this project. Now is as good a time as any to start. Is anyone else interested?

Thank you all for your kind comments! Judging from the amount of comments, I guess this is the most popular of my two shots?

Mary Anne, since my goal with the series is to portray the changes of the seasons rather than the changes of weather I've been trying to keep things as constant as possible - that includes point of view as well as lighting. So, I have been selective in what days I go to photograph this scene - sometimes waiting patiently for a sunny Saturday or Sunday morning.

This particular day (a Friday) I was late for work, as the forecast for the week-end was gloomy - and I knew I wouldn't have many days left before the leaves would be gone. The tree is now bare - and it hasn't been sunny since I took this picture...

Finally, if this has inspired anyone to shoot one scene over a year or more: I've learned the following lessons so far:
1. Make it a subject close by (this tree is a bit too far out of my way to be convenient, so I am thinking of starting another series of just the view from our house).
2. Choose your point of view with care. The position and angle of the sun in relation to your subject and your point of view needs to work well all year round (the lighting on the tree from my original point of view is not as good at this time of year as when I started).
3. Seasonal changes happen very quickly. For this scene, once a month is perhaps fine during Summer and Winter, but during Spring and Fall, I needed to shoot more frequently (at least once a week) to capture the magical changes (I missed mid-May when the blooming field was at its solid yellow peak).

This a wonderfully warm autumn photo, Olaf. And what a wonderful idea for a project! Maybe it will inspire others of us to do a similar once-a-month view of a scene. I'm struck by how few bad weather days you've captured. Are you being selective, or is your weather generally pleasant?

Very nice set of pictures you have there - must be fun!!
This view is particularly pleasing to me - I guess because it makes the most of the autumn color.

You must be trying to make me jealous. I shovled 18 inches of snow of my driveway this morning. Great scene and the timeline series should be very interesting. -Doug
