What went wrong here, Olaf, was the light being all from above *and behind Alex*. I had no chance to do anything about it--not even was I allowed to use fill-flash--nor to change my position during the rehearsal. The original in color is simply awful; this b&w conversion is the best result I could get in post-processing to preserve what Michael likes about the image. Those "assets", though, make the picture worthwhile for me (with all its obvious technical flaws). Thanks for stating your concerns! -- db.

While I have to agree with Michael's comment on all counts, I can't help but also feel that something went wrong in the processing of this image: too much of the same tone of medium grey over the entire frame. Perhaps it would be better in color? - with more separation between background, skintones, clothing and instrument?
