Arichonan - barn with Loch Sween beyond

arichonan NR 774 912 view map

first of a group portraying this village, which was cleared in 1848. See http://www.knapdalepeople.com/ArEssay.html by Heather Macfarlane, whose ancestors were among those removed. The photos show quite clearly that this was no group of out of date hovels, but a community that had put enormous labour over decades into optimising their environment. Thank you for these beautiful photos. My ancestors were at Arichonan when they were cleared in 1848 (Allan & Catherine (Campbell) McLean). They settled in Middlesex County, Ontario and were able to make a new start with land that was their own and no one could take from them.
