tomb of king Edward II

This tomb marked the turning point between the cathedral being down on its luck and the start of its period of prosperity and explosion of architectural inventiveness.

Edward II had a somewhat troubled reign http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/edward_ii_king.shtml) resulting in refusal to even host his body by Berkeley and other prior choices. Edward III perhaps in some sort of contrition showered the abbey with wealth
