Colwall: Church of St James - C14th roof with cusped wind-braces

this roof has had to be considerably reinforced over the ages with 2 tie beams and much ironwork. The arcade here probably founded on boggy ground has not been been able to resist outward thrust as well as the similar roof at Mathon (3 miles further down the valley of the Cradley Brook) which has complete walls.

This roof form was undoubtedly spawned by the Guesten Hall roof at Worcester Cathedral, built in 1320
