MY MOM HAD PAIN FROM THE NECESSARY TREATMENTS AND MENTAL PAIN BECAUSE SHE WAS YOUNG GIRL AND HAD TO STAY AT THE HOSPITAL SO I GUESS SHE FELT MORE LIKE ABANDONED. MY GRANDPARENTS COULD ONLY SEE HER TWICE A MONTH HOSPITAL RULES. THEY LIVED IN SAN DIEGO. MOM DIED WHEN SHE WAS 60 BUT NOT FROM TB OR ANY EFFECTS FROM THE TREATMENT.

I'M VERY THANKFULL FOR HOSPITALS LIKE THE BEAUTIFUL WAVERLY, MY MOM WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TB ABOUT 5 YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN AND OTHER THEN SCARS ON HER NECK FROM THE TREATMENTS THEY GAVE HER SHE SHE MADE A FULL RECOVERY. OTHER THEN BEING BORN WITH 60% NERVE DAMAGE IN BOTH EARS, I'M GOOD PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THE MATINGLY'S TURNED IT INTO A MUSEUM EVEN THOUGH SOME OF THE TREATMENTS WERE HARSH BY TODAYS STANDARDS, THEY WERE CONSIDERED STATE OF THE ART BACK THEN, PATEINTS HAD FRESH AIR,HAD A GOOD HEALTHY DIET, THEY WERE VERY WELL CARED FOR. AS FAR AS THE MOVIES GO, UP UNTIL MAYBE THE 30 MINUTES OF DEATH TUNNEL IT WAS ANOTHER SLASHER MOVIE, BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION THEN THERE WAS A SMALL HISTORY LESSON.THE ABUSE OF PATIENTS CAME WHEN IT BECAME A GERIATRICS HOSPITAL AND THE STATE CLOSED IT DOWN BECAUSE OF THE ABUSE.LET US REMEMBER THIS HOSPITAL IS VERY MUCH A HISTOICAL SITE AND PLAYED A VERY BIG PART IN LOUISVILLE'S HISTORY.THANK YOU MR AND MRS MATTINGLY FOR PRESERVING HISTORY.

why would someone want to restore a structure that has had numerous haunting accounts reported, and where many many many many many more people died and were mistreated than how many survived. The amount of deaths seriously outweigh the amount of survivors ..
the mattinglys must be psychotic to ah point to restore it .. they should take their money instead to help out everyone in the U.S. who are in financial straights due to our crumbled economy ...

Also to note, after the religious group failed in their mission to build the statue, the Mattinglys, current owners, bought the building and are restoring it.

Jannette,
You should watch the movie "Spooked" which is a documentary about Waverly Hills. This movie is filled with interviews of survivors of Waverly Hills. Each piece I have seen on Waverly talks about the dedication of the medical staff, and also of the many patients who survived. Please note that people are respectful, for the most part, of the fact that TB was the reason patients were here, and that many did indeed recover, as 63,000 DID die. However, the building was left to decay after it spent about twenty years as a geriatric center. TB, though not eradicated, was phased out as an epidemic and in 1961, the hospital closed, was quarantined for two years, and then was opened as the geriatric center. When that closed in the '80s, the building was abandoned, until a religious nonprofit group purchased the building to build an Arts and Worship center which included the World's Largest state of Jesus Christ. They attempted to raise money for their projects, but needed about $100 million, and failed when they had only raised $3000 after one year. The owners then tried to have the building condemned by digging out the foundation with a bulldozer, as you saw in some of these pics. If you are not a believer in the paranormal, that is fine, but please understand that many people have had unusual experiences which they cannot explain, and this leads to a natural fascination and desire to learn more about the paranormal world. Our brushes with the other side are embedded in our own beliefs, and though you do not have to agree with them, please understand that is where the fascination is coming from for many.

Ms. Murphy, I don't know if you are aware of this, but no one is vaccinated against TB in the USA. It is not part of our standard vaccine regimen. My husband was, because he is a soldier, and has been deployed a number of times. TB became so rare here, they didn't "need" to vaccinate anyone. However, there is now an alarming increase in TB cases here, especially in our inner urban areas, and it is MDR-TB (Multiple drug resistant tuberculosis). The CDC has information about it on their website. One of the reasons we don't get the vaccine is because we would then show a positive result on the TB skin patch test, which I think is ridiculous. If they truly suspect TB, a chest Xray will show it. My sister is an RN at a chidren's hospital, and she's had 3 patients with it. I agree with you on another point, no one stops to think about all those who survived, and all those who worked hard to see that they did.

Oh dear! How you love to terrify yourselves!'Death Tunnel' - the movie - was a disjointed piece of trash, based not on truth, but on the old stories told time and time again, which is not the same thing at all.Neither is simply deciding to believe it. As a person not involved in the making of the movie, how could you possibly know what was true and what wasn't? You would have had to have been there, of course. High buildings attract suicides, sick people hang themselves the world over, and TB is a dreadful disease that by definition is bound to cause much anguish, especially when the patients are piled in 'en masse' so to speak. If the girl who hanged herself was a proven suicide, if there is evidence to suggest that someone helped her along, and if someone was proven to have thrown him or herself off the roof, how does this a) make the movie 'great'? or b) prove that this hospital was in any way different from any other TB sanatorium? My mother spent two years in one very similar in the north of England. She lost a lung to TB and pleurisy, and she had many harrowing tales to tell, but above all, she always spoke of the hope, care and compassion displayed by the dedicated people who tried to save lives at enormous risk to their own. Experimentation was very much part of it - it had to be. Nobody knew how to stop the White Plague and everyone should be aware that innoculation is still absolutely necessary since TB certainly has not been eradicated. It was tragic that people killed themselves, but in no way unusual for such an establishment and certainly not a rational basis on which to label a cheap horror movie 'great'.The building deserves more respect, and so do the people who struggled for breath there all those years ago.

"death tunnel" was based off of a true story and it was filmed in side of this hospital. everything in that movie was true and even the ghosts in it,the girl who hung herself and her friend that finished her off,the girl that jumped off of the roof...it all actually happened,i have the movie and i researched it all.its really a great movie.

I recently watched a movie called Death Tunnel. The sanitarium in this movie looks exactly like this one, only in the movie it was called SJV Sanitarium. These people were dying of a disease known as the White Plague. Would TB spores and the White Plague be the same thing?

Hi! I am a licensed health care professional and am very much in awe of the history behind the Waverly; however, I am concerned if TB spores can live in this moist damp environment and be a possible health hazard. An amazing structure. Also, is anyone aware that the author George Orwell who wrote 1982 was a patient in this facility. If you read the book you will get a definite feel for the desolation and isolation and hopelessness felt by these poor interred ill people.
