South-Mexico to Argentina.
The following 7 subspecies are being recognized:
Myiodynastes maculatus insolens - Gulf slope of Mexico to Honduras. Winters to northern South America;
Myiodynastes maculatus difficilis - Costa Rica to Colombia and Venezuela, Coiba Island and Cébaco Island;
Myiodynastes maculatus nobilis - Caribbean coast of Northeast-Colombia to west slope of Sierra de Perijá;
Myiodynastes maculatus chapmani - Pacific Colombia (Chocó) to Northwest-Peru (Piura);
Myiodynastes maculatus maculatus - Venezuela and the Guianas to Northeast-Peru and North-Amazonian Brazil;
Myiodynastes maculatus tobagensis - North-Venezuela and Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago;
Myiodynastes maculatus solitarius - South-Peru to Paraguay, Uruguay, Central-Argentina and Brazil.
