West-Mexico to Northwest-Ecuador.

The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Mitrephanes phaeocercus tenuirostris - West-Mexico;
Mitrephanes phaeocercus phaeocercus - South-, Southwest- and East-Mexico to Honduras and Nicaragua;
Mitrephanes phaeocercus aurantiiventris - Costa Rica and West- and Central-Panama;
Mitrephanes phaeocercus berlepschi - East-Panama to Northwest-Ecuador.
