Great picture!
We also found this at NEMF in Mont Alto Pa. It is Camerops petersii. If you slice it vertically you will encounter a hard carbonaceous upper layer and then the perithecia are immersed at varying levels so that some have longer necks than others in order to reach the top surface. The dots on the surface are the mouths of the perithecia where the ascospores are dispersed.
