On this final weekend of the 2011 mushroom season we had two walks. Not surprisingly, many of the same species of mushrooms were found at both locations. The Saturday walk was led by naturalist Taro Ietaka. Taro knows his mushrooms quite well and is our local expert on slime molds (Myxomycetes). He is also our new Publicity Chairman. About 8 people attended the walk. Here is what was found: (Photos of this walk are courtesy of Mary Gagliotti)!
Ascomycetes: Ascocoryne sp., Bisporella citrina, Chlorociboria aeruginascens, Hypoxylon fragiforme
Jellies: Dacrymyces palmatus
Puffballs: Lycoperdon pyriforme
Gilled Mushrooms: Coprinellus micaceus (= Coprinus micaceus), Hygrophorus sp., Lactarius sp., Panellus stipticus, Megacollybia rodmani (= Megacollybia platyphylla), Mycena sp., Panellus stipticus
Polypores: Daedaleopsis confragosa, Grifola frondosa, Phellinus ignarius, Schizophyllum commune, Steccherinum ochraceum, Stereum complicatum, Trametes versicolor, Trichaptum biforme, Tyromyces chioneus
I led the Blue Mountain walk. It was especially enjoyable to have new members with us eager to learn as much as they could. So despite the fact that with the exception of the fresh Grifola frondsa (Hen of the Woods), that we found, it was a very informative walk for all.
