I have never seem them puff up like this when cooing. Has anyone seem this behavior?

Oh yes! This is typical behavior for the male. Cooing & puffing to attract the female. This one is putting on quite a show! Wonderful timing, Tom! Beautiful detail & pose! V~

Our most common dove, which looks a lot like this one, puffs up to an enormous size during the mating display! Very nice shot here, with excellent details.

Great setting Tom, used to see them do this when I lived on the mainland, always thought it was part of the mating ritual. Not seen them at all on the Island...

I can't say that I've seen mourning doves puff up, but my lovebirds do. I believe it is common bird behavior.
