February 16 2006:
Records from 1861

Been researching my family roots in the archives up in London again. I recently discovered that my Great Great Grandfather spent some time in the Islington Workhouse, whilst his wife and family stayed at home. Not sure why this was, although I did start to look through some of the ledgers today, but I still need to find out when he was admitted there, probably in the 1860’s.

Here is a sample page from the ledger for 1861, recording the death of a deserted infant.

Dan, a workhouse could well be thought of as a prison as it was so hard to get yourself out. It was a house for the poor and destitute, giving them bed and board in return for work. It was generally regarded as being a very harsh, last resort sort of place with very poor living and working conditions.
Nice angle and use of DoF, Ray, creative.

My first thought was beautiful handwriting. It looks like calligraphy. Your family history sounds very interesting - like a Charles Dickens story.

How cool and interesting to be able to sleuth out data from your past . . .I have no idea about my family before 1914!

Beautifully captured,Ray.

"Workhouse"... is that a term for prison
or just a house of work?
Here it would probably be the former.
