Took a wander today, and ended up in Lurgashall, over the border in Sussex. This is the village shop that is also the Post Office. Post Offices in the UK also act as agents for a whole range of government services, such as old age pension collection, some state benefit collection, as well as application forms for things such as passports and driving licences.
This village does not seem to have any public transport, so for the elderly, infirm and so on it really is quite a lifeline. Not only that, it tends to act as a focal point for communication in the community.
I supported the shop if only by putting my 37p over the counter for a Bounty bar (plain chocolate, of course).
