March 31 2004:
Lock Keeper's Cottage

Sutton Green, Surrey

This is the old lock keepers cottage on the Wey Navigation. Much of the River Wey was either widened or re-aligned in centuries gone by so it could handle waterborne traffic between London and the south coast of England. This also involved building a two mile stretch of canal joining the Rivers Wey and Arun.

Of course, first the railways, and then the roads took freight away from such rivers, and now it is now just used for pleasure, unless of course you happen to be a bird or fish!

Nice photo.
They keep some locks beautifully.
An era long gone on the railways.

When I looked at the thm, I immediately got the feeling that I was looking at a very old photo from the past. You managed to create a certain mood with your motiv, your framing and you finish here .

I've seen lots of lock keeper's cottages around this part of the world - they are all well kept, tidy and loved houses, often with sweet little country cottagey English gardens outside.
Thanks, Ray - another wonderful image you've given us!

really nice Ray! I like all the lines leading in to this one. Is a lock keeper sort of like a light house keeper? I always thought that would be a romantic job. But maybe it's just lonely?
