I prefer the first one. I like the broken skin and the tone on the onion. I agree with ??? that this one is just a bit too "in your face." Maybe it's the flash on the bulb. For deeper focus did you try f/11 or f/16?

I have to go against the tide on this one. I prefer this angle to the other angle although the other one really does illustrate your story better. This one could stand to be just a bit more sharply focused, but none the less it works well. Nice job. - liza

the first of the two images for me Ray, you could use the clone tool to take out the flash glare.
