September 13: Makin' Music

Guildford

I visited Guildford today and was really spoilt with photo opportunities. Its an historic city with plenty of students and street musicians around. On top of that, the balcony of the Guildhall was open, as today was the annual Heritage Day when usually closed locations are opened up. You can see images from this balcony in my Street Shadows gallery, and more featuring the Holloway Brothers (depicted here)and another band in my Street Music Live! gallery.

I know some regular viewers of my images have musical connections, so what is this guy playing, which is like a minature keyboard with a pipe to blow through?

Thanks, Richard: you are obviously very knowledgable about this kind of thing! ~~~Ray.

The instrument in question is called a "melodica". Little more than a child`s inexpensive (pre-electronic era) introduction to the keyboard. They were generally to be found in schools music departments during the 1960s - I was often forced to play one of these spit-filled plastic contraptions during music lessons. Interestingly the instrument gained some credibility during the 1970s: Jamaican musician Augustus Pablo recorded some classic "dub" instrumentals using the melodica as a kind of harmonica substitute.
The best known album from this reggae artist - "King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown" is regularly re-issued on CD. Too much information?
