Cranleigh

Surrey view map

This obelisks sits at the eastern end of Cranleigh, it being erected in 1794 by Dr Jacob Ellery to commemorate the opening of the turnpike from Horsham to Guildford that passed through here. A mileage to Windsor seem strange these days, as in the modern world you now have to be much much nearer to that town to see any directions to it!

Brighton was not a favourite place of Jane's ;)

I love these originals...31 miles by carriage...bone crushing I imagine :)
