January 6 2009:
The Day The Wonder Died

The remaining Woolworth's in the UK finally closed their doors today. I visited the Surbiton branch to see few regular items left and in fact half the store was closed off as workmen were rapidly dismantling empty shelves.

Did I buy anything? Yes, 20 "Pick'n'Mix" paper beakers for 50p and a 2009 diary for....wait for it.....7p.

Victoria Road, Surbiton, Surrey, 6th January 2009.

I seem to remember there were branches of Woolies in those parts of Germany where the British and US armies were based - I wonder what happened to those?!

We had them here too until about 15 years ago. Sad to see them go. I used to go shopping during lunch downtown there.
Rose Atkinson06-Jan-2009 21:11
Sad. I had a Saturday job in Woolies when I was a young teenager

They should have called me in before it was too late!
Phillip Normanton06-Jan-2009 20:09
Should've offered them 50p for the 'book of condolence' :-)
Ric Yates06-Jan-2009 19:48
The passing of an era - but I agree with Jonny JAG about the condolence book!
Johnny JAG06-Jan-2009 19:17
It's sad to see them go, but a book of condolence?
J. Scott Coile06-Jan-2009 19:07
Sad. I can remember them over here too.

'Woollies' has always featured in my life,
It will be strange without them in the High Street!
Sad indeed.
