thoughts on the art of photography

This is a personal diary of my thoughts and opinions about photography...for whatever that's worth. It is my belief that maturation in the art of photograph only comes through an exploration of how I feel about the things that make up an image. So I figured I would use this space to collect my thoughts.

I would appreciate any comments, discussion, disagreements on any of the ideas here...that's another part of why I am posting them.

Interesting thought provoking stuff. Hopefully one day I myself from being a 'trigger happy' shooter turn into a more emotionally selective photographer (my current state can partially be blamed on the digital revoloution, in good old film days things were bit more constrained, at least in my case).

Christina, Thanks for chiming in with your thoughts. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I stuggle personally with getting much out of abstract art and abstract photography. This is purely a personal thing as my fiance really is a fan of abstracts. Either way, I think you have described well the motive for creating images, whatever they may be. I qualify that by saying, images that are created for art's sake. Because I do believe (and I don't think I'm alone here) that there is a world of difference between images that simply serve as a record and images that evoke emotion and thought.

Chuck, you've had me thinking for days on this subject! I have definitely been thinking about my own photography and trying to decide what it is about the act of creating, the photos themselves, sharing them, that makes me happy to continue this pursuit. I definitely agree with you about the storytelling aspect of photography. Those are some of the most compelling images at times. I can think of a handful of really well done galleries here on pbase that successfully capture not just a story but a mood and an emotion (or two). However, I must defend abstract art. Sometimes what a viewer (not to mention an artist) wants is something that simply evokes an emotion without all the excess baggage of intellectualizing the image. That's what I work for in my art. I'm not all together successful, (maybe when I actually have time to devote to it!), but it's what I go for. That and trying to look at the mundane in a different light. Trying to show something familiar in a way in which maybe you haven't thought to see it. I think photography ultimately is about expressing what is inside the photographer and a good photograph will also aid the viewer in understanding a little more about what is inside him. Some people have stories to tell. Others are filled with a morass of emotions that just need to be expressed. I think that both are legitimate ways of creating great art. Chuck. You've laid out some thoughtful comments here on the art of photography. I really appreciate the time you've taken to do this and they've caused me to go back and look at some of my own work in a different light. This is pbase at its best!!! Daniel.
