29 V-Drum Sander on Mobile Stand

Pearland, Texas

This V-Drum Sander got just too heavy for me to be moving around my cramped shop area in the garage, so I decided to put it on a rolling stand, or more accurately a metal stand which was then put on a dolly.

As you look at the sander you will notice that it is not centered on the top of the metal stand. The reason for this is that the motor, right rear, is fairly heavy, and I wanted to "balance" it better on the metal stand. The metal stand was one that I bought second-hand years ago and was underneath my 8" grinder which I seldom used and sold, keeping the stand :-)

The "dolly" was built from yellow pine 2x4s and 2x6s. The wheels are 4" with a locking mechanism. This allows me to roll the V-Drum Sander out of the garage very easily, set the wheel locks, plug it into the extension cord, and sand away to my heart's content. A sanding mask is highly recommended unless there is a breeze blowing, and you can position yourself upwind. You may notice that I haven't hooked it up to my shop vac. The reason is that I sold the floor model that I had as it was a big nuisance most of the time, taking up too much room/floor space. I will buy a wall hanging unit soon; meanwhile, it's outside for sanding.

My current project is a cyclone dust collector. I have finished collecting information on them - efficient dust collectors are much more complicated than the inexpensive ones that we see on the various sites with unsuspecting owners crowing about how well they work. They do work; however, they act primarily as "drop boxes", collecting the heavier materials and blowing out the more dangerous, fine dust for the unsuspecting buyer/user to breathe in. I am gathering the materials and have started working on it. I'll start to post pics on it soon.
